Mitchell Brodey, MD, Margaret Turk, MD, Richard O’Neill, PhD, to be featured on HealthLink on Air April 22
The Sunday, April 22 HealthLink on Air radio program will feature interviews with Mitchell Brodey, MD, discussing adult immunizations; Margaret Turk, MD, discussing an Upstate clinical trial for the treatment of foot drop; and Richard O’Neill, PhD, who provides his weekly “Check Up from the Neck Up.”  HealthLink on Air is broadcast from 9-10 a.m. Sundays, on FM Newsradio 106.9 and 570 WSYR. National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is April 22 to 28
Upstate recognizes the work of its medical laboratory professionals during National Medical Laboratory Week, April 22 to 28. Upstate has more than 200 laboratory professionals who are dedicated to providing the highest level of laboratory services in support of a vast range of medical specialties within its hospitals and throughout the Central New York community.

Register for Strikes Against Stroke by April 25
Wednesday, April 25 is the deadline to preregister for Strikes Against Stroke. The third annual event features bumper bowling and ramps. Walk-ins are welcome. Strikes Against Stroke will be held Saturday, May 6  from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Flamingo Bowl, 7239 Oswego Road, Liverpool. Clinical Trainer Fair is April 24
The Clinical Trainer Shared Governance group at Upstate University Hospital will host the annual Clinical Trainer Fair featuring educational displays from individual specialty areas Tuesday, April 24 from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. in the 11th floor Kinney Performance Center at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. The fair offers an opportunity for staff to learn from each specialty area and interact with the clinical trainers/PSLs from each area. Refreshments will be available.

Bruce Dearing Writing Awards ceremony is April 25
The Upstate community is invited to the Bruce Dearing Writing Awards ceremony Wednesday, April 25 from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Medical Alumni Auditorium at Weiskotten Hall. Celebrate the writers and hear excerpts from the winning entries. Light refreshments will be served. Sponsored by the Center for Bioethics and Humanities.

Blood Drive is April 26, 27
Upstate’s Blood Drive will be held Thursday, April 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, April 27 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Café 750 at Upstate University Hospital. All donors will be entered in two separate drawings to receive a $50 gift card toward items relating to major or minor league teams and a Spring Fling Barbecue Basket. In addition, donors will receive a coupon for six free wings courtesy of Buffalo Wild Wings. First-time donors will also receive a coffee voucher compliments of Advocates for Upstate Medical University.

Anatomical Gift Memorial Service is April 28
Upstate’s Anatomical Gift Memorial Service will be held in honor of the donors and their families Saturday, April 28 at 3 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University.  The program, organized by the students in Upstate’s colleges of Medicine and Health Professions, includes personal reflections by family members, alumnae, students and faculty as well as a musical interludes. The memorial service has become a tradition, enabling medical, physical therapy and physician assistant students to acknowledge the importance of the body donation program in furthering their education as future healthcare providers and to thank the families for respecting and endorsing the wishes of their loved ones. This year, members of 245 families from Central New York are expected to attend the service.

Registration is open for Miracle Ride
Register for the 18th Annual Miracle Ride by Friday, April 27 to receive a 2012 Miracle Ride T-shirt. The event will take motorcyclists through a scenic 60-mile ride in Onondaga and Madison counties while they raise money to support pediatric care at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and the new Upstate Cancer Center. Pre-registration is $30. Registration after April 27 is $35. Raise $150 in donations and ride free. The event will be held Sunday, May 20 and begin at the Spinning Wheel Restaurant, 7384 Thompson Road., North Syracuse. Autism Awareness Walk is April 28
The Seventh Annual “One Piece at a Time” CNY Autism Society of America (ASA) Walk, supported by Upstate’s Margaret L. Williams Developmental Evaluation Center and Kohl’s Autism and Related Disorders Outreach Program, will be held Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m. in Long Branch Park.  The event will include a bounce house, vendor tables and light refreshments. Upstate University Hospital employees will receive a 10 percent discount at a spring uniform sale to be held Wednesday, May 2 and Thursday, May 3 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the small cafeteria at Upstate University Hospital. Ten percent of the proceeds from sales benefits Upstate’s 3R Image that supports such events as the Nursing Excellence dinner and Nurses’ Week events. Volunteers needed for type 2 diabetes study
If you or your partner has diabetes, and have above-normal blood glucose levels, you may be eligible to participate in an Upstate research study.  Researchers in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences are conducting a study of a telephone intervention for patients with type 2 diabetes and their spouses/partners. All patients will participate in diabetes education provided by a diabetes educator via the phone. Phone sessions will focus on helping one manage diabetes and make recommended diet and activity changes. You will either work individually or together with your partner.  All couples will receive payment for research assessments. Syracuse Corporate Challenge registration is now open
Registration is now open for the Syracuse Corporate Challenge, to be held on Tuesday, June 19 at 6:25 p.m. on Onondaga Lake Parkway, Liverpool.  The race will include chipped timing. The registration fee of $32 includes a Team Upstate tank top, Corporate Challenge T-shirt and post race refreshments. Upstate shirts and run numbers will be available for pickup Monday, June 18 from noon to 1 p.m. outside Café 750, Upstate University Hospital, and in the cafeteria at Upstate Community General. Registration for the event is limited to 8,000 participants.
