Personalized pencils sale, Aug. 6
The Advocates will hold a back to school personalized pencil sale Thursday, Aug. 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the small cafeteria at the Downtown Campus. Sets of 10 No. 2 lead pencils in primary and pastel colors cost $6. After Aug. 6, orders can be placed through Aug. 10 by contacting Susan York, yorks@upstate.edu, 464-5610.

Presidential search open forums are Aug. 7, 14 and 18
Presidential search open forums will be held Aug. 7, 14 and 18 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Medical Alumni Auditorium, Weiskotten Hall. Candidates for the position of president of Upstate Medical University will present, followed by a question and answer session. The forums also will be available via live streaming. The forums are open to the Upstate Medical University community only.

Upstate Cancer Center to host Guest Artist Gallery Showing and Art Tour, Aug. 20; R.S.V.P. by Aug. 14
The Upstate Cancer Center will host its first Guest Artist Gallery Showing and Art Tour, featuring works by local artists Jacqueline Adamo, Kathleen Deep and Nicora Gangi, Thursday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. Light food and drinks will be served. The evening will include talks by the featured artists followed by a tour of the gallery’s quality art located throughout the Cancer Center. The gallery will feature new artists every quarter. Select items are available for purchase. Mary Nelson’s Back to School BBQ is Aug. 15
Mary Nelson’s 14th annual Back to School BBQ will be held Saturday, Aug. 15 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the corner of South Salina Street and Wood Avenue in Syracuse. Macy’s Shop for a Cause shopping passes to benefit Pediatric Radiology Department
The Advocates are selling Macy’s Shop for a Cause passes for $5 to be used in any Macy’s store on Saturday, Aug. 29. Proceeds will benefit the Pediatric Radiology Department at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital for tumblers for the children to use and take home when preparing for their contrast exams. Register for Ride for Cancer Care
Register for Ride for Cancer Care to be held Saturday, Sept. 13. The motorcycle ride begins in Canastota and ends at the American Legion Post 1153 in Sylvan Beach. Food, entertainment and prizes are included at the event. Paddle for the Cure registration deadline is Sept. 4
Register by Friday, Sept. 4 for the 11th Annual Paddle for the Cure to benefit the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of CNY and breast cancer research at Upstate. The event, to be held Saturday, Sept. 19, starting at 9 a.m. ,rain or shine, includes a two-mile paddle on the Moose River beginning at Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company in Old Forge, NY. Pre-retirement planning session is Sept. 29
A pre-retirement planning session for those in the New York State Employees Retirement System and within five years of retiring will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m. in 2231 Weiskotten Hall. The session will explain how pension benefits are calculated, how to maximize your benefits, what to do and who to contact when you are ready to retire, and a detailed explanation of NYSHIP retiree health insurance.
