Volunteers needed for genetic child behavior research study
Biological parents of a child between the ages of six to 12 years, may be eligible to participate in an Upstate research study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Drs. Stephen Faraone and Stephen Glatt are studying new ways of classifying mental health disorders in children and looking to change the way that psychiatric disorders are understood and diagnosed in the future. To do this, genetic variation and basic cognitive abilities within families will be analyzed. The goal is to provide a better basis for a new diagnostic system that is less subjective than what is currently used. The plan is to recruit about 700 families (2,800 individuals), looking at a broad spectrum of childhood behaviors, from those children who are developing typically with no mental health concerns, and also those who may have any mental health concerns or behavioral problems. Parents and their children will complete a series of questionnaires and computer-based tasks, and provide a blood sample for genetic analysis. The study procedure takes up to three hours for the family. Each participant will be financially compensated. For more information and to enroll in the study, call Pat Forken at 315-464-5619.
