William J. Brunken, PhD, FARVO, has been named a Silver Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Fellows Class of 2015. With this recognition, Brunken serves as a role model and mentor for individuals pursuing careers in vision and ophthalmology research. ARVO is the largest eye and vision research organization in the world whose members include nearly 12,000 researchers from more than 75 countries. Brunken is vice chair for research for the Department of Ophthalmology at Upstate, director of the department’s Center for Vision Research (CVR) and professor of ophthalmology, neuroscience and physiology.
Cherry Ignacio has received a 2014 International Student Leadership Award from the International Center of Syracuse. She accepted her award at the center’s International Citizen Awards Dinner, held Nov. 14 at Upstate Medical University. The award recognizes Ignacio for her outstanding contributions to promoting international and global understanding through cross-cultural awareness, education, voluntary service, advocacy, community building and leadership. Ignacio is a doctoral candidate in biochemistry and molecular biology at Upstate. Ignacio has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in the International Student Association at Upstate and coordinated Upstate’s relief effort after Typhoon Haiyan.
