There’s still time to participate in The One University Survey
A follow up email from Press Ganey regarding The One University Survey was sent through email on Dec. 6, reminding individuals of the Dec. 17 deadline to participate in the survey. To date, more than 1,600 individuals have submitted surveys. Survey findings will help shape future important decisions for Upstate. Individuals without access to a computer can take the survey at the Survey Computer Center, located in Room 1109, Downtown Campus (hallway behind the main bank of patient/visitor elevators). 2018 Heart Walk team captains needed
Team Upstate is looking for motivated individuals to serve as team captains for the 2018 American Heart Association Heart Walk, to be held April 21 at OCC, 4585 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse. Team captains coordinate their department’s participation in the event. Team Upstate has been one of the top Heart Walk teams for the past 20 years due in large part to the efforts of its team captains. A kickoff lunch will be held for Heart Walk team captains Thursday, Jan. 25 from noon to 1 p.m. at a location to be announced. • The Well New York State Every Day Monthly Challenge is to take seven minutes to organize an area in your home or workspace. This can decrease holiday stress. To register and track your progress, visit Wellness.
Tranquility Tuesdays with Kaushal Nanavati, MD. A 30-minute meditation every Tuesday at noon in 2244 Academic Building. A recorded version is available at Pathway to Wellness.

Apply for Friend in Deed funding
The Upstate Foundation is accepting applications from Upstate employees for Friend in Deed funding for projects that enhance the patient experience at Upstate University Hospital’s Community and Downtown campuses. Friend in Deed is the annual fund for the hospitals and is largely supported through donations from grateful patients and their families, as well as members of the Upstate family and the community. Guidelines and applications are available on the Upstate Foundation website at Friend in Deed or by calling 315-464-4416. Applications require the approval of a department head. The deadline to submit applications to the Upstate Foundation office (CAB 326) is Friday, Jan. 12.

Entries for Holiday card contest due Dec.15
The Nursing Department is hosting a campus wide holiday card contest. Entries will be assessed on innovation, collaboration, and demonstration of Upstate pride. Entries are due Friday, Dec. 15. Campus-wide voting will be held Dec. 18 through Dec. 21 with the winners announced on Friday, Dec. 22. The department capturing first place will receive hot cocoa and cookies. Center for Bioethics and Humanities Journal Club to meet Dec. 8
The Center for Bioethics and Humanities will hold its Journal Club meeting Friday, Dec. 8, from noon to 1 p.m. in 3507 Setnor Academic Building. The reading is from the Oct. 9 New Yorker article by Kelefa Sanneh titled, “Color corrected: Is diversity an improvement on affirmative action, or the end of it? Register for holiday meal
Employees at Upstate University Hospital’s Downtown and Community campuses who work at least one shift Christmas Day (Dec. 25) are eligible for one of three complimentary meals that day.
• Downtown Campus complimentary meal options are: 5 to 6 a.m. (breakfast), 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 4 to 8 p.m. (dinner). Tickets will be distributed Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 19, 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 1203 Upstate University Hospital.
• Community Campus complimentary meal options are: 5 to 6 a.m. (breakfast); 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 4:30 to 7 p.m. (dinner). To order tickets, contact Theresa Discenza, discenzt@upstate.edu by 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 11. Sharon Adkins will hand out the tickets on Wednesday, Dec. 20 and Friday, Dec. 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 1125.
Meal tickets will not be mailed to departments and are valid Dec. 25 only for the Christmas meal being offered. Valid tickets are required for complimentary meals at both campuses. Copies of meal tickets will not be accepted. Contact the administrative supervisor on Dec. 25 if an extra meal ticket is needed for eligible staff.

Emerging Infectious Disease Unit seeks volunteer clinicians
The Ebola Unit at Upstate’s Downtown Campus will become the hospital’s Emerging Infectious Disease Unit (8M), equipped to handle a variety of highly infectious diseases. The unit seeks skilled critical care registered nurses and hospitalists or intensivist physicians to volunteer to join this team. Team members will receive specialized training specific to highly contagious infectious diseases. The unit is secured, has full clinical pathology and portable x-ray capabilities onsite, and can accommodate up to two critically ill patients simultaneously. Construction will soon begin to turn the unit into a negative pressure area capable of handling a variety of airborne illness. It is important Upstate be in a state of readiness to care for patients with any emerging infectious disease, such as Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-COV) and drug-resistant tuberculosis. The specialized team will help us care for our community and ensure the safety of our staff. Holiday Happening is Dec. 12
The Upstate Family is invited to the 2017 Holiday Happening Tuesday, Dec. 12. Breakfast will be served 5 to 6 a.m. and an ice cream social will be hosted from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Cafe 750 (located on University Hospital’s Downtown Campus 2nd floor) and the Community Cafe (located in the basement of the Community Campus). These locations will close at 1:30 p.m. to prepare for the event and re-open at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Dazzle Gifts on the Hill holiday sale is Dec. 13, 14
Dazzle Gifts on the Hill, the Community Campus gift shop, will have a holiday sale Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 13 and 14. All merchandise, excluding food and drinks, will be discounted by 20 percent. The gift shop is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. 2018 Health Insurance Rates for state employees announced: deadline to change plans is Dec. 15
Employees who participate in the New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP) have received a “Rates and Deadlines” publication at their home addresses from the Department of Civil Service Employee Benefits Division. The rates will be reflected beginning with the check dated Dec. 27. For rates and more information, visit Health Insurance Choices. No action is required by individuals who wish to keep their current health insurance option and still qualify for that plan. The deadline for individuals who wish to make a change in plans is Dec. 15. Changes can be made by submitting a signed Health Insurance Transaction form PS-404 to the Upstate Downtown HR-Benefits Office, 2nd floor, Jacobsen Hall, (fax: 315-464-4390) or the Community Campus HR Office, 1st floor (fax: 315-492-5275).

Holiday Shops at Upstate Cancer Center is Dec. 15
The Holiday Shops at Upstate Cancer Center will be held Friday, Dec. 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the atrium of the center. Donate to the Holiday Coat Drive
Donate new or gently used coats to Upstate’s Holiday Coat Drive, to be held Dec. 19 through Jan. 9. The drive is presented by Upstate’s Think Green Committee and Team Upstate. Coats will be distributed by Interfaith Works to those most in need. Nominations sought for Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Services
Nominations for the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service will be accepted through Friday, Feb. 2. The award, created by The State University, recognizes classified employees represented by CSEA, PEF and PBA of NYS for excellence and superior service.
