Two publications produced by Upstate Medical University’s Marketing & Communications Department received national awards from the Association for Women in Communications. Cancer Care magazine and a feature article in Upstate Health magazine each received a 2018 Clarion Award. Cancer Care magazine–which showcases patient stories, and expertise from the health care providers and researchers at Upstate – was named best overall external magazine with a circulation below 100,000. In the category of magazine feature articles, top honors went to “Comeback Kid: He died at the Dome – and lived to tell about it,” written by Amber Smith. Upstate Health began in the fall 2011. Cancer Center magazine launched in summer 2014 with the opening of the Upstate Cancer Center. Each publication has a circulation of more than 39,000.
