Hyundai Hope on Wheels delivers grant to support Upstate’s pediatric cancer research
Hyundai Hope on Wheels and Syracuse-area Hyundai dealers have awarded Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital with a $75,000 Hyundai Scholar Grant to Jody Sima, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics, for her research initiative to recognize and improve markers of cardiovascular health in pediatric cancer survivors.
Upstate’s children’s hospital is one of 43 recipients of the grant that supports principal investigators – known as Hyundai Scholars – in their efforts to improve the lives of children battling pediatric cancer.
“Dr. Sima’s research is a vital piece in improving the lives of children battling pediatric cancer, and it wouldn’t be possible without this kind of funding,” said Richard Sills, MD, chief oncologist at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. “Our institution continues to make strides at finding a cure, and Hyundai continues to be an important supporter of our pediatric cancer research program to make that possible.”
The $75,000 Hyundai Scholar Grant to Dr. Sima was presented during a Hope On Wheels hand print ceremony at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital June 20, where children battling cancer placed their hand prints in colorful paint on a new Hyundai Tucson, the official vehicle of the program, to commemorate their battles with cancer. Every hand print ceremony celebrates the courageous lives of the children faced with cancer and brings Hope On Wheels’ community of supporters together.
In addition to the $75,000 Hyundai Scholar Grant, Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital also was awarded with an additional $10,000 toward the purchase of personal technology and electronics as part of the Hyundai Hot Spot Award, designed to fill the void of in-care activities catered to teen patients.
Hope On Wheels primarily provides funds to nonprofit children’s hospitals across the United States for pediatric cancer research, and strives to build public awareness about the importance of this cause. Hyundai and its U.S. dealers fund the program. With every new vehicle sold in the United States, Hyundai customers join Hyundai and its dealers in funding important life-saving research.
