Zumba enthusiasts raised $3,892 at the United We Dance for a Cure—Zumba-thon charity event, held April 18 at the Cicero Family Sports Center. Proceeds will support the Christine Schoeck-Blakely Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at The Upstate Foundation. The fund supports the research of an Upstate Department of Pathology team that is studying genetic alterations in the development of targeted therapy for the treatment and management of ovarian cancer. In four years, the event has raised more than $15,000 for the fund, which honors LaFayette resident Christine Schoeck-Blakely, who died of ovarian cancer at the age of 38.
The 1st Annual Transplant Golf Tournament, founded by kidney transplant recipient Michelle Mastropolo and her wife, Carole Ann Davies, raised $9,875 to benefit the Upstate Transplant Program. The proceeds from the May event will support the Organ Donation and Transplant Fund for patient assistance. Attending the check presentation are transplant surgeon Vaughn E. Whittaker, MD, Mastropolo, Davies and social worker Tania Lyons.
