Upstate Gala set for Nov. 17

The Upstate Gala, Upstate Foundation’s largest black-tie social event of the year, will be held at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center at Oncenter Complex Friday, Nov. 17.

The event, held 8 p.m. to midnight, offers an evening of dining and dancing to music by the capital district’s Grand Central Station Band. A Patron Party precedes the Gala at 7 p.m., at the Oncenter’s 800 S. State St., Syracuse location.

Proceeds from Gala will benefit Upstate Medical University clinical care, education and research in the areas of brain health and neurodegenerative diseases with a focus on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia.

Honorary Gala co-chairs for this year’s event are Sam and Carol Nappi and Sharon A. Brangman, MD, and Charlie E. Lester. Sam Nappi is founder and chairman of Alliance Energy. Carol Nappi, a former psychiatric therapist at Community General Hospital, now Upstate’s Community Campus, is active with numerous community and national charitable organizations. Sharon Brangman, MD, is the division chief of Geriatrics, University Geriatricians and the Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease; a Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine; and has served as the president of the American Geriatrics Society. Charlie Lester is assistant director of Physical Plant and Facilities at Upstate.

Last year’s Gala attracted nearly 700 people at Marriott Syracuse Downtown, raising $357,000 to support the renovation of the maternity unit and nursery at Upstate University Hospital’s Community Campus.
