Supporting the Community Giving Campaign: In Their Own Words
Mary Shirley, EKG/EEG associate, Community Campus, is supporting the Alzheimer’s Association through Upstate’s 2016 Community Giving Campaign. “Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 79,” says Shirley “When she passed, we asked everyone to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association because they’re dedicated to finding new treatments. Registration for Community Campus Blood Drive is Oct. 20
Registration for the Community Campus Blood Drive will be held Thursday, Oct. 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the cafeteria at Community Campus. The blood drive will be held Wednesday, Oct. 26 from noon to 6 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 27 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Dining Rooms 1 and 2 in the Cafeteria at the Community Campus. Hispanic Heritage Month activities, Oct. 20
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), and guests from Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Syracuse will host a Heart Health and Wellness Program Thursday, Oct. 20 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Community Room at Community Campus.
Learn popular Latin dances like the Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and the Cha Cha. Light refreshments will be served and the American Heart Association will be on hand to offer information on heart health in both English and Spanish. For more information, call Nakeia Chambers at 464-5234.

Pathway to Wellness announcements
• Carrie Carlton, RD, will serve up a healthy recipe to share Thursday, Oct. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Café 750, Downtown Campus.
• Welloween will be held Oct. 24 to 28 at the Health Sciences Library at Weiskotten Hall. The preliminary schedule is as follows: Oct. 24: flu shots, Meatless Monday, Healthy Monday; Oct. 25: back pack assessments, learn to knit; Oct. 26: Tai-chi demonstrations; Oct. 27: pet therapy dog visits; and Oct. 28: frightening finances.

Upstate Golisano pumpkin contest seeks entries
Enter your scariest, funniest or most original pumpkin creation in Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital pumpkin contest, to be held Friday, Oct. 28 in the 11th floor Kinney Foundation Performance Center at the children’s hospital. Contestants must use real pumpkins; carved pumpkins will not be accepted. Winner of the group category will receive a snack attack for their area. Winner of the individual category will receive a $25 gift card. All hospital employees, units and areas are encouraged to enter the contest and to vote – online voting will be available. Pumpkins can be dropped off between 8 and 9:30 a.m.; voting will occur between 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The winner will be announced at 4 p.m. Pumpkin pick-up is between 4 to 5:30 p.m. For more information, contact Jenny Dickinson, dickinsj@upstate.edu, 464-9330.

Register by Oct. 21 to give Halloween treats at children’s hospital
Upstate’s annual Halloween parade for patients at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital will be held Oct. 31 at 10:30 a.m. Participants must be employed by Upstate, wear a child-friendly costume, and supply their own items to hand out. Medical Spanish Discussion Group meeting is Oct. 25
Upstate’s Medical Spanish Discussion Group will meet Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Health Sciences Library in Weiskotten Hall. The discussion group will use a case study approach that allows participants to role play the parts of clinicians, patients and family members. Members of our local international medical graduate community have volunteered their medical Spanish expertise. The Upstate community is welcome. Retirement party for Hilda Doughty is Oct. 29
A retirement party for Hilda Doughty will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Syracuse Turners, 619 North Salina St. Syracuse. Food and a cash bar will be available.
