Upstate celebrates International Housekeepers Week through Sept. 15
Every year this week represents a special opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of Upstate’s Environmental Services Team and thank them for a job well done. Help honor the dedicated professionals who maintain a healthy, clean, and safe environment and tell them they are much appreciated.

New York State Health Commissioner to speak at Upstate Friday, Sept. 14
Howard A. Zucker, MD, JD, commissioner of health for New York state, will present Re-Imaging Public Health during the College of Medicine Dean’s Grand Rounds Friday, Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to noon in 2231 Weiskotten Hall. The Upstate community is welcome to attend.

Day of  Service is Sunday, Sept. 16
All are invited to join the Center for Civic Engagement for Upstate’s annual Day of Service, Sunday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students, faculty, and staff will meet on campus for a brief orientation before going to community sites for activities including painting, gardening, and wellness activities. Upstate’s Well-Being Task Force offers online self-assessment tool
Upstate has partnered with Mayo Clinic and MedEd Solutions to offer the Well-Being Index, a brief nine-question online self-assessment tool designed to provide immediate feedback about ones well-being and distress, and how it compares to peers. The self-assessment tool is anonymous and confidential, and personal information will not be shared with anyone at SUNY Upstate Medical University. This is not a survey. It is an opportunity to learn more about oneself, and local and national well-being resources. Employees, students and faculty will receive an email Sept. 25 with information and instructions on the five versions available: physicians, nurses, residents/fellows, students, employees. Participants choose the version best suited for their position. The email will come from “Upstate’s Well-Being Task Force.” The subject line will be “Invitation to use Well-Being Index Tool.” For more information, email Dr. Paula M. Trief, at triefp@upstate.edu.

Upstate’s iPage redesign preview available online
As part of the ongoing redesign of Upstate’s website, a new design of the Upstate iPage is available for preview. The page features a mobile-friendly responsive design, easy access to Upstate’s most frequently used applications, a hospital status dashboard, links to some of the most used web pages in the site, and an events feed featuring upcoming and ongoing events. As always, more in-depth and audience-specific content/links may be found on pages labeled in the top menu for staff, faculty, students. OTD offers Emotional Intelligence classes for employees and managers
Organizational Training and Development (OTD) now offers TalentSmart’s Mastering Emotional Intelligence (EQ) class. Learn what EQ is, your EQ score, and strategies to handle yourself in times of stress and dealing with others skillfully. Supervisors/Managers answer on-line questions about themselves and invite others to anonymously answer those same questions. Non-supervisors and managers answer on-line questions about themselves. The cost for managers and supervisors is $288; $140 for non-supervisory employees. The registration fee will be charged to the participating employee’s department and covers the online assessment, a workbook for the eight-hour class, and a copy of Emotional Intelligence 2.0. Concept to Commercialization Boot Camp is Sept. 13, 14 and Oct. 18, 19
The second annual Concept to Commercialization Boot Camp, two distinct two-day workshops, will be held Sept. 13, 14 and Oct. 18, 19 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the third-floor theater at the Central New York Biotech Accelerator, 841 E. Fayette St., Syracuse. Lunch and beverages will be provided. The program is sponsored in part by a grant from Empire State Development, which allows registration fees to be waived for Upstate employees and students interested in biotech-related innovation and the commercialization process. Copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution available Sept. 17
In celebration of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day Sept. 17, Upstate’s Health Sciences Library will offer free copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America. The day commemorates the 1787 signing of the Constitution of the United States of America and recognizes all who have become U.S. citizens.

National transformational speaker Craig Zablocki to speak at Upstate Sept. 25
The Upstate Foundation invites all Upstate health care professionals to a special event featuring national speaker and author, Craig Zablocki, Sept. 25 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in 4414 Academic Building. With humor and heart, Craig helps organizations confront obstacles and create powerful change. Zablocki is a transformational speaker who will address “How Bringing Your Best Self Fosters a Positive Patient Experience.” Continuing educational credits are available for Nursing and Social Work staff. Books and CDs for signing will be available for purchase following the event. The event is part of the Grateful Patient and Family Program and is co-hosted with its Physician Philanthropic Council and Upstate Philanthropic Council.

14th annual Paddle for the Cure registration is open
The 14th annual Paddle for the Cure will be held Saturday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. at Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company in Old Forge, N.Y., and will benefit the Carol M. Nominations are being sought for the quarterly Upstate Super Star award program. This award is open to all hospital and campus employees who consistently exemplify Upstate’s values and mission. Annual Turn 4 A Cure Breast Cancer Walk is Oct. 7

NYS and CSEA Partnership for Education and Training offers Skills for Success
The NYS and CSEA Partnership for Education and Training offers CSEA-represented employees with learning opportunities designed to provide employees with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to meet their personal and professional development goals. Scheduled statewide from September through December 2018 are 88 classes in 53 course topic areas. To increase participation in courses while limiting time away from the office and eliminating travel expenses, the Partnership is offering 16 classes via webinar.
